Fresh air was brought into the home through the HRV unit, preheated by the heat exchanger, and then distributed throughout the home by the air ducts. Stale air was exhausted from the home through the HRV unit, passing through the heat exchanger and transferring its heat to the fresh air. This system allowed the home to have a constant supply of fresh air without losing heat.
