In one project, I was responsible for the design and installation of a hydronic system that utilized solar thermal energy to heat a residential home. The system consisted of a solar thermal collector array, a storage tank, a heat exchanger and a hydronic distribution system.
The solar thermal collector array was installed on the roof of the home and consisted of a series of evacuated tube collectors. These collectors were designed to efficiently capture solar energy and convert it into heat. The heat was then transferred to a heat transfer fluid that circulated through the collectors and into the storage tank.
The storage tank was used to store the heat collected by the solar thermal collector array. The tank was well-insulated to minimize heat loss and was equipped with a temperature sensor that monitored the temperature of the water.
The heat exchanger was used to transfer heat from the storage tank to the hydronic distribution system. The distribution system consisted of a series of pipes that carried the heated water throughout the home. The water circulated through the pipes and transferred heat to the rooms through baseboards or radiant floor heating systems.
The system was designed to provide space heating for the home and was able to meet the majority of the heating needs of the homeowners. The system was also able to provide domestic hot water for the home.
